Mad Coops - 2:06

The announcement in last update about the Mad Coops [tm] was a true success; many people joined the fray. Sometimes we were actually able to do a good run, but sometimes it was pure lag hell :) The first run was a 3-player id-coop: The second was a crazy super-lagged 100% of >Cult (modified version) with 6 players: We also managed to record two better demos on Doom2_08: Enjoy!

Various news items - 7:33

Some good and some bad news today. Let's start with the bad.

A few weeks ago, a few SDA regulars told us we should have a closer look at the demos from a specific person, as they were all quite odd; monster behaviour was weird, as if the recording was done at <10 fps. Yet the demos contained lots of tricks and bunnies, both impossible at such framerates. When our tech-guys examined the demos more closely, they turned out to be recorded on a host_framerate setting other than 0, which we consider cheating as hopefully all of you know.

This person was Romanov Maxim. We have tried to contact him about this matter but sadly, he has not responded. Since his cheating was undeniably proven, we will take the neccessary steps and remove all of his demos from the system, even though only two of them have been examined. We will not accept any new demos from Romanov in the future anymore, cheated or not.

It's a sad matter, and it sucks to see that there are people that will go as far as cheating just to get their name up on a site where getting that little bit of fame is all there is. There's no money involved, we're doing this for purely for fun, and people like this are seriously spoiling that. His suckage is beyond words.

All of the records Romanov broke are now restored. Here they are.

Easy runs: Easy 100%: Nightmare runs: Nightmare 100%: Thankfully, there's some good news too: I got my t1 connection, finally :) This means that I'm now able to host madcoop running! wh00p! To test it, Will, Optic, Marlo and me gave it a try: we did a 4p easy 100% run of Doom2_01 in 0:16, it was great fun, even though not all pings were good (Marlo ran with a 400 ping). If you want to join in some madcoop action, contact me at ICQ UIN 10962661; I'm pretty sure there will be lots of it this week, starting from tonight (my server is located in The Netherlands btw).

Last of today's issues is RDE: I've resumed work on the very last level and will try to keep track of my progress on the RDE Progress page as much as possible. If you haven't already, make sure you download the Anti-Bunny Code and go to the Anti-Bunny Code Testing page to see how you can test it and how to send me your feedback - I really need this to decide whether or not to include the ABC! Thanks!

Speed Completily Beyond Belief released - 13:41

As a celebration of the 2nd anniversary of the release of QdQ's first production, we proudly present to you: Speed Completily Beyond Belief, two 100% episoderuns (easy and nightmare) through all of Beyond Belief. It's available at the Quake done Quick page in several formats (the full version of SCBB contains the levels themselves too, since some of you probably don't have them yet). Go get it!

6/10/1999 by Jesse

Unreal Speedrunning Starts - 1:12

In case you haven't already seen them, head over to the once again pioneering LostSpirit Custom Level Demos to check out the world's first Unreal speedruns. They even feature some tricks! Please note that you probably need a recent version to playback the demos (2.24), and even that is no guarantee the demos will run on your machine as Unreal's democode is not as solid as Quake's. Anyway, they should provide some very good entertainment so head over there now!

Dont forget that the Ware contest over at Mineral's ends tomorrow, so if you haven't sent your demo yet, make sure you do it before the dealine!

Third link of the day is the Runner's Delight progress page which was updated today with a screenshot from the intro cinematic.

Quake 2 Update: Better Late Than Never - 3:03

Ok... I know I promised to try my best to update last Wednesday, but something came up. I decided to buy myself a new computer, a P3-450 192mb with Riva TNT2, and man, does it rock. I used to be running Q2 on 320x200 software at 25fps, now I'm on 800x600 accelerated at 60fps, and the difference just blew me away.

Anyway, apart from this there are 21 new demos this update. Not as much as you might expect considering the delay, but this is mostly because many of the runners have been busy working on Quake 2 done Quick 2. By my current estimates, the first person perspective version could be available perhaps by end of the month.

Alright, let's start off with newcomer Paul Carlsson's demos Runs from Mr-J[!!] Runs from Sean Crooks, who clocks the most number of demos for this update: Runs from Jesper Lund: Last but not the least, one more fun from Aivars: Grab this update's packs:

5/31/1999 by Ilkka

New demos - 6:17

Right. There were some mistakes in my previous update:

1. Church 1:09 was nightmare run.
2. Church 1:11 demo was easy 100%.
3. The correct time for Romanov's h3m4 nightmare run is 1:20, not 0:46. Apologies.

New demos

We have two 100%s from Optic:

FAB did four singleplayer demos:

Romanov did two demos:

Marlo did four two demos:

Retard did his first SDA demo:

Hopefully I didn't screw up this time. More demos will be posted when I have time.

5/29/1999 by Jesse

New contest - 17:14

Woohoo, even though he's doing updates to SDA like a madman, Ilkka still managed to set up a new speedrunningcontest over at Mineral's. This time, the contest map was made by SDA-regular Attila; get the map and start running!

5/29/1999 by Ilkka

Lots of demos - 2:15

Here goes most of the demos you've been sending during the last few days. The remaining ones will be updated when I have time. I'm having exams at the moment, so I'm not able to update too often.

5/24/1999 by Tangent

Quake 2 Demos - 9:36

Yes, sorry, I haven't been available to update the Q2 section for a while. Just found out that I have even free less time during holidays than during exams. Sheesh... What I need to do is to blackmail Illka into doing it for me I guess. Anyway, I should be updating on Wednesday.

5/24/1999 by Ilkka

26 demos! - 7:05

Woah, lots of demos for one update! I was quite busy during the last few days so I couldn't update these earlier. Anyway, some of the following demos are REALLY cool. Definitely worth downloading, enjoy :)

Markus Taipale strikes against my ID records:

Marlo has not slept enough lately. First of all he improved all of Matthias' FR Castle records:

Richard Skidmore did two demos: Asmodeus did four demos: Custom-demo master Optic submitted three runs today: Some madness on Mexx2, by Ilkka and me (it's been ages since I did my last run) All demos from this update can be found in one big zip here.

Runner's Delight Episode

The progress on the project has been good lately. For those of you that don't check the progress-page regularly (you should :), I set the ultimate release date to the 30th of July a while back; check out the Runner's Delight Progress Page for the full scoop, as well as today's news about the anti-bunny code and betatesting.

Hunter - 10:39

I messed up with that Hunter demo on my last update: The demo was made by Goetzenzar.

Anyway, Filip Söderholm sent a new demo for Hunter. He ran it in 0:58 just a while ago. Apologies to everyone.

Peter Horvath does two incredible new 100%'s! (I guess he's still got it!)

Kimmo Polvivaara improves Optic's E2M4 Nightmare run by 5 seconds getting 1:00.

Also, the SDA team would like to make it clear that all marathon runs should be sent directly to Nazgul and not the whole SDA team.

SdSlite Demos - 5:06

Marlo also did a coop with FAB:

Amazing New Demos! - 9:31

Markus Taipale attacks the original Quake runs again getting some great new times. Why is it Markus never comments in his text? Doesn't he have anything to say about his great demos?!

My old buddy Ilkka Kurkela has improved some times also.

Peter Horvath does a nightmare run of E1M4 in 0:30 which improves Optics time by 16 seconds(!) using a very impressive ogre grenade jump.

Attila Csernyik and Peter Horvath did a couple of coop's.

Marlo Galinski and Fabian Kollakowski have improved Ilkka and Juho's time of E1M1 by 1 second getting 0:34.

As always it will take a little while for the demos to mirror so dont send any flame mails about broken links.

Exams Suck - 14:56

Nolan and I will be having exams until May 1st. Meanwhile, we do not have the time to update q2timer or the Quake 2 speedruns, so please bear with us through this... difficult period. Now, now, I know you all wish us well for the exams, there's no need to spam our e-mail boxes with good luck wishes. :)

Contest; Corrections - 13:57

New Contest up at Minerals

Ilkka and I have been working on a new speedrunning contest-pak, which has been released today. Head over to Mineral's to download it straight away. Unlike earlier contests, it features an intro-movie! Actually, it's not like any of the other contests, when you download it you'll find out soon enough ;)

Corrections

Last update I mentioned the new e4m1_019 demo, and said Marlo Galinski made it; I was wrong, it was ofcourse done by Markus Taipale. Sorry Markus. The error is fixed now.

Another mistake I made was uploading Marlo&FAB's coop easy 100% of e1m1: Ilkka and Juho already did this demo a long time ago, before M&F. Sorry all... Get the new 0:35, run now.

I got a demo by Asmodeus recorded on the level Area 51. Asmo got the level from /levels/a-c/area51.zip. on CDROM, but unfortunately, this isn't the Area 51 we have listed here at SDA! Anyway, I'm not adding the demo to the tables, but I can understand the confusion, so here's Asmo's 1:02 nightmare run to watch. Note that you need the level linked above. (The Area 51 in the SDA tables can be found here.).

He also did these runs: Finally, Ilkka did one custom run too: Runner's Delight

The RDE-progress page is updated with another screenshot.

id-demos

There are a lot of id-demos that need to be posted, we know (even one that has been waiting since january, argh!). Coming soon, please be patient....

Demtool and Marathon Runs - 8:39

Just a message from Stefan, the author of QdQstats:
Hi,

I probably didn't make this clear enough (although it's written
in QdQstats' textfile :p) In order to use the dem->pak converter,
one needs demtool in some directory that's in the PATH variable
(or, alternatively, one can edit the batch file and change the
line that calls demtool, adding the correct path).

Without demtool, all the demos will be separated and put into
one .pak, but they won't be chained which makes the whole process
somewhat pointless (or at least, the outcome is not as good as
it should be).

New demos - 16:01

Some new custom demos, and since all of the people that usually update id demos are lost, I decided to do them too.

Marlo Galinski and Fabian Kollakowski smashed a lot of pretty fast coop-times; they did 100% demos of the first 4 maps of both episode 1 and 3, and some others. Marlo also did some single player runs: Fabian submitted a really nice single player demo too: Newcomer Tommi Kyntola did a pretty nightmare 100% of e3m1: There are some more demos waiting; this week, promise =)

4/8/1999 by Nazgul

Ilkka goes Hipnotic - 11:21

Ilkka sent me two SoA easy runs a week ago, sorry for the delay in posting them! As ever these can be found on the Marathon Runs table.

Who will be the first to try a DoE marathon? :)

"(QdQ) under 20 (minutes) is doubtful" - Anthony - 2:23

I received this email from an anonymous user, forwarding to me a 2 year old email from Anthony Bailey (leader of the QdQ team) to the other runners in the QdQ Project:
From baileya@cs.man.ac.uk Fri Apr 18 15:18:44 CES 1997
Subject: Re: all 11 messages I got!

Here's a quick bit of crystal-gazing... It looks like we will beat the
initially proposed four minute mark on Episode 1 by a mile. I'm
figuring less than 3:30 for the entire episode! Episode 2 I reckon
less than 5:30 but there could be complications meaning changes in
either direction. I'll be pessimistic with Episode 3 and just say less
than 6:00 - I know the routes, but have little idea how long they
take. The same for Episode 4.

An entire run of Quake (all 4 episodes plus Shub - ignore the between
mission stages as the viewers are going to need breaks between all
that action!) will definitely work in substantially less than 25
minutes. Whether it can be squeezed under 20 is a bit more doubtful,
but that *is* roughly the sort of time we should be expecting.

Please don't save this e-mail and embarass me with it later when I'm
proved so terribly, horribly wrong on all counts! (c:
Now for a reality check:

Episode Anthony's Prediction QdQ QdQr
Episode 1 3:30 3:24 2:57
Episode 2 5:30 6:01 4:34
Episode 3 6:00 4:32 4:13
Episode 4 6:00 5:16 4:17

Quake Completed in 10:00! - 23:32

And this is no April Fool's joke. The Quake done Quick team has just released Fiend Run Lite, a speed run through of Quake in 10:00, morphed as a fiend. It is available as both a movie (check out the great models) and first perspective. Go get it now!

RDE Released! - 0:07

Finally it's here. Finally! After months of hard work, Runner's Delight is now officially released! To most of you, this will probably come as a surprise, and actually I was a bit surprised myself everything worked out so well and fast as I was fixing the last problems.

For those of you that don't know: RDE is a missionpack for speedrunners; it contains six new levels that are especially designed for speedrunning, but it can be played as a standard singleplayer episode too, and also has full coop and DM support.

RDE is now available as an 8 meg zip file over at the download section over at the RDE page.
